Evidence-Based Care & Regulation

🩺 Animal Welfare, Assessments & Risk Management

Knowledge in Nature Development NPC aims to facilitate funding for animal assessments conducted by appropriately qualified professionals in each province. These assessments will help identify animals that may require intervention, assistance, rehabilitation or other appropriate care, while supporting informed decisions regarding their welfare and needs.

🐾 Professional Animal Welfare Assessments

We actively support initiatives that connect qualified professionals with animals in need across every province:

  • Independent evaluations by certified specialists and veterinarians
  • Early identification of animals requiring rehabilitation or veterinary care
  • Practical interventions that protect individual animal welfare
  • Objective recommendations based on species-specific needs and standards

🔬 Independent Scientific Risk Assessments

We aim to support independent, scientifically based risk assessments relating to wildlife permitting, species classifications and regulatory decisions that affect the responsible keeping of animals:

  • Evaluation of peer-reviewed scientific evidence and real-world data
  • Analysis of potential ecological impacts and invasive potential
  • Rigorous appraisal of public safety considerations
  • Protection of South Africa's irreplaceable indigenous biodiversity

Evidence-Based Regulatory Submissions

Where existing or proposed species classifications, permit restrictions or regulatory decisions require further scientific investigation, the NPC aims to facilitate fundraising for assessments conducted by appropriately qualified professionals.

These assessments may evaluate relevant scientific evidence, potential ecological impacts, invasive potential, public safety considerations and risks to indigenous biodiversity. Their findings can help inform discussions with relevant regulatory authorities and, where appropriate, support evidence-based submissions requesting a review or reconsideration of existing or proposed restrictions.

Our objective is to encourage transparent, scientifically informed and proportionate decision-making that balances biodiversity protection, responsible animal keeping and appropriate risk management.

The NPC recognises the importance of protecting South Africa's indigenous biodiversity and aims to support initiatives that promote responsible practices and decisions grounded in credible scientific evidence.

We aim to work collaboratively with suitably qualified professionals, conservation organisations, relevant authorities and community stakeholders to ensure that initiatives are responsibly managed and focused on meaningful outcomes.

"Every contribution has the potential to help generate knowledge, support informed decisions and create opportunities for positive change."
